Museum educational online products: a Handbook

This publication presents one of the first attempts to create an annotated reference book describing museum resources for online education. It lists educational museum resources posted on the websites of nearly 300 leading global museums, on the websites of international and national museum associations, and on educational platforms.

The handbook contains annotated information about 670 resources used in formal and informal educational methods, including:

263
PODCASTS
155
APPS
126
SMALL PRIVATE ONLINE COURSES
84
MASS OPEN ONLINE COURSES
42
MUSEUM GAMES

The publication reflects the state of the museum online educational products market as of January 2020, right before the introduction of restrictive measures due to the pandemic.

  •

The authors of the handbook wish to attract the attention of users and developers of educational online products to educational products which aren’t yet well-known, developed by museums themselves, museums in cooperation with universities or based on museum collections. Thus, knowing the content of the handbook will allow:

    users

to simplify the search for educational products they are interested in

    museum experts

to attain deeper knowledge of their coworkers’ experience in developing educational online products and develop a strategy of introducing museum online products into the educational area

university professors and other educational products creators

to explore opportunities for establishing collaboration with museums to use various museum online products, primarily educational ones, in the development of online courses

The content of the handbook is organised in a user-friendly manner:

1) All identified resources are first grouped by type (MOOCs, SPOCs, games, etc.);

2) Within each type, resources are arranged alphabetically by the names of the organizations that created them.

The numbering of records is continuous for each type of resource.

Most of the handbook resources contain a brief abstract taken from the resource’s description on the website. The entire array of resources has been reviewed by the compilers of de visu.
